Mesothelioma Fact Is Projected

Unfortunately, people suffering from mesothelioma (a cancer caused by asbestos) has a rather poor prognosis. There is currently no cure for mesothelioma, and when the disease is discovered, patients usually have little time to live. Without treatment, mesothelioma is fatal within four to eight months. New forms of treatment are still developed and tested, however, and there are signs that the health of a patient at diagnosis, the greater the life expectancy of the patient.

There are cases in which therapy should be lived up to five or ten years, but this is very rare. Even in treatment, most people survive less than a year, and often only a few months after being diagnosed with mesothelioma. According to recent studies approximately 10% of the victims live less than three years after diagnosis and 5% to reach in five years.

One of the reasons the prognosis is so bad is that there is such a long period of time between the exposure of a person to asbestos and the onset of symptoms of mesothelioma. It may take several decades before signs of mesothelioma begin to occur in a person. One study showed that when the mesothelioma is caught and treated early, 50% of patients survive two years and 20% achieved five years, but unfortunately it is very difficult to detect the disease early. The fact that the symptoms of mesothelioma are so easily confused with other diseases further delay a correct diagnosis of mesothelioma in many cases.
